One of the first pieces I acknowledge, this was
written in conjuction with An Immorality in the summer of 1971. I
was a student, filled with new learning and eager to try it all out. As I
wrote, I tried first to make the piece as rich and beautiful as the text,
and also to break systematically each rule I had learned. I was delighted
to find that it worked!
It is a tonal piece, secular despite its biblical origin (I regard it as a simple love song), in A+, suitable for a good amateur choir, and full of romantic gestures and harmonies. It was premiered in 1973 by the Edmonton Symphony Chorus, under John Pauls, and has been performed several times since.
